Accessibility

Small changes, big impact.

Physical and digital accessibility are key components in creating an inclusive and welcoming sports club. Being proactive in improving both ensures people with disability can fully participate and feel valued in the sporting community.

Digital accessibility is becoming increasingly important. After all, a person’s first impression of your club is often online! Your website, social media posts, and online materials play a big role in showing that your club is inclusive and open to everyone.

But, while digital accessibility contributes to a great initial impression, physical accessibility determines how a person feels while visiting your premises. Do they feel welcome? Do they feel safe? Do they feel comfortable?

Imagine this: a person with disability visits your website. Because you’ve taken steps to improve digital accessibility, the website is easy to navigate, uses clear language, and has images that reflect people of all abilities. When they arrive at your club, they find accessible parking, friendly faces, and a welcoming atmosphere. Your club has created an environment where this person can find a sense of belonging.

Physical accessibility often makes us think about ramps, accessible toilets, and parking, but it’s important to remember that it’s so much more than that! Physical accessibility impacts a person’s dignity, well-being, and ability to connect.

And the good news? Improving accessibility doesn’t have to be costly or complicated. Small, low-cost changes — like clearer signage, better lighting, or adding captions to videos — can make a big difference to people with disability and show your community that your club genuinely cares.
